It's not clear if Sega intends to do the same. Original story: Alpha Protocol, one of the best spy games on PC opens in new tab , has been removed from Steam opens in new tab. The page is still live, but it's no longer available for purchase.

When the notice was spotted cheers, Nibel opens in new tab , there was some speculation that a remaster or something new was coming, but unfortunately it's a much less exciting reason: the publishing rights have expired. If you own Alpha Protocol, you'll still be able to play it, and you'll keep being able to download it whenever you want. If you never picked up this gem, however, you'll need to find other ways. Phil revisited Alpha Protocol opens in new tab in and found it hard to stay mad at its missteps, even after taking off the rose-tinted goggles.

More importantly, there are lessons here that should be learned from and built upon. Fraser is the UK online editor and has actually met The Internet in person. With over a decade of experience, he's been around the block a few times, serving as a freelancer, news editor and prolific reviewer. So if you liked Mass Effect give this game a try.

There's a lot of choice that effects how the game plays out. It has a lot of variety to the missions that I find to actually be better than Mass Effect's missions. Except for the boss missions, these guys are super human and will frustrate you to the point of turning the game off.

It uses the Unreal engine and looks quite nice IMO. There are also some tweeks you can search on google to make it look even better if you want. I can play the game on an old PC with a 3.

Here's a couple things to try for the PC version that I found helps improve the game. Make a copy in the same folder of the files, APEngine. This slows the turning speed and slows the animation when crouched ect. I really felt it helped improve the games controls.

Unfortunately the game was released as a buggy mess and deserved the low review scores it got. Even though it plays fine since it was patched and works even better with these tweeks, its just too late to reverse the bad reputation it has. I fully agree with the other reviewers who said this game was underrated by the "official" reviews.

It is a great RPG, with excellent character progression, intriguing story, excellent voice acting some of the best I've heard in a video game in some time , and a great sense that your choices have an impact on the outcome of the adventure. Moreover, I thought that the level design was actually quite good, with multiple legitimate ways of completing virtually all of the missions.

It is also a bit short for an RPG, and I can see where it could have been more "fleshed out" in parts some story elements remain undeveloped, depending on paths you take, and at times the plot becomes a bit convoluted. But the length and divergent paths, combined with the possibility of multiple playstyles, give it good replayability. Overall: Sure, it could be better, but still a rocking good time.

A- Read full review. I held off on buying this for a while because it got really bad reviews, but after playing it at a friend's house I figured it was worth picking up. I've since played through it a total of 3 times at hours per playthrough -- it's an amazing game! Yeah, it's got an annoying camera glitch do some googling to figure out how to fix it , but the stealth elements are loads of fun, the combat is great, and basically no matter how you develop your character, you finish the game feeling like a totally unstoppable badass.

That's not what this is. Do buy this game if you like games in which your character gets more powerful over the course of the game, games that involve lots of sneaking a round and taking out unsuspecting guards, and games with complex stories that your choices actually affect. Fun and addictive, I definitely recommend it! Read full review. Here is a good example of a game with ltos of deep thought behind it. Deep and compelling story with lots of twists and turns.

More options than most in the wannabe RPG games with a spin on consequence for ones actions. I really enjoyed the storyline system and the different twists and spins that one can use through conversation manipulation.

It gave a good illusion of actually having an impact on what's going on. After playing through various parts and trying different options and choices, the story pretty much remains the same through most of the game. The action sequences were nice and the interactions with well developed npc personalities was also refreshing. Well worth the money spent. Anyone who enjoys the FPS, action, spy genres should enjoy this game. I had this product and bought it for a birthday present for a friend.

This was a fun action game with so many different ways to play it. I liked the game and have beat it 5 times. The story changes on who you trust and who you kill, my first and second time through were very different just based on that alone. If you get this game and like it I can tell you after you finish you will want to play it again to see what changes you could have made. Its on my list for top 5 best games.

Alpha Protocol has been removed from Steam (updated) | PC Gamer.

Alpha Protocol is a fun, over the top love letter to spy fiction that rewards you for taking the longer route rather than running and Alpha Protocol is a fun, over the top love letter to spy fiction that rewards you for taking the longer route rather than running and gunning. Voice acting is top-notch and the improved cinematic dialogue is nowhere near the crap Bioware's Mass Effect pulled.

Conversations sound and look like conversations. The problems some players seem to have with this game are horrendously exaggerated. After playing through the unpatched game several times I have to wonder if it's not a whole bunch of faulty computer rigs that causes problems.

Not to say that Alpha Protocol doesn't have it's fair share of problems, but absolutely not any more so than other Unreal Engine games. My guess is that Sega didn't give the critics their pile of "ignore all bugs"-money like EA did. Alpha Protocol is the game of the genre similar to Mass Effect series, but in the "espionage" setting of post cold war "war on terrorism"; I Alpha Protocol is the game of the genre similar to Mass Effect series, but in the "espionage" setting of post cold war "war on terrorism"; I have found it to be done in a very interesting way, giving a player quite a lot of opportunities to change the result of the game.

The choices matter in this game and bring consequences; the game still is quite linear and suffers from technical limitations of its engine While taking it slightly out of context - Christian Donlan with Eurogamer describes it best, "[Alpha Protocol is] a contemporary super-spy mod of Mass Effect Tags: A few words or tags that come to mind are: entertaining, anticlimactic, buggy, bittersweet.

Time to beat: 13 hours Quickest Speedrun: 1 hour, 39 minutes Ten years after its release, Alpha Protocol still sneaks by with a passing grade. A spy thriller, action role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment casts Michael Thorton as the spy protagonist. Diving deeper into the world, you'll be split between safe houses in Taipei, Rome, and Moscow where you'll execute various missions.

While I found this title to be quite buggy and shallow in some respects, it still managed to entertain and amuse its way into my recommended list - even if narrowly.

Many accounts have detailed the many missteps between Obsidian and Sega, but ultimately lack of direction and organization is what led to this release not being more of a slam dunk. Alpha Protocol has entertaining gameplay and the narrative, characters, and dialogue hold up well. Unfortunately where it sags down is in its lack of depth. Many components or aspects of the game either feel shallow and unfinished, or appear to be directly lifted and shifted in from other games like Mass Effect in terms of leveling up, skill progression, and combat.

I feel much today about this game as I did the first time I played it. And In a way, it's satisfying to see that my opinions on some things don't change through the years. I just wish in the case of Alpha Protocol, they weren't so bittersweet. Pros: - Character progression and leveling are rewarding and leave you excited to play further. It's also a barrel of fun. They breathe some extra life into the game. While there are some exceptions, most play their part well and add an extra bit of intrigue.

Spy action RPG. Cons: - AI is absolutely dreadful and brain dead. Especially with the characters outside of Michael.

The responses based on options can be a bit off. I just don't like him. It's an odd experience in that I found it entertaining and wanted to keep playing, but on a component level, I found a mess of problems across the board. I think the entertainment in Alpha Protocol ultimately boils down to getting more stuff so you can kill more bad guys, rinse and repeat.

Multiple weapons, armor, and gadgets; Lots of which can be upgraded or modified in some way. With over a decade of experience, he's been around the block a few times, serving as a freelancer, news editor and prolific reviewer.

Strategy games have been a year-long obsession, from tiny RTSs to sprawling political sims, and he never turns down the chance to rave about Total War or Crusader Kings.

These days, when he's not editing, he can usually be found writing features that are 1, words too long or talking about his dog. Audio player loading…. Almost everything made by Obsidian is on gog and ironically AP on Steam is drm-free already. Yes it's such a messy game but there's no other game in history with such a good dialog system. I have it, but I would prefer to play it on GOG. A fantastic game that deserves a nice release on GOG. Waiting to buy it again here. It is a must have title.

And If i can get it here, I would be happy! Great game! Played it on so having it on GOG would be very nice :.

Already DRM free, so we need it here. Very good game with some interesting features. I'd really like to play Alpha Protocol 2. Leaving aside the fact that there is already DRM free retail disc and Gamersgate versions , this has probably one of the best action and consequences system. Also, great characters and stories and lets you choose your type of gameplat: stealth, gunblazing or a mix of the two. I've started with a custom, lonely, character based on what i think a spy should be and ended up with a shadow army.

And that was darn satisfying to see how things unfolded with my allies to back me when was needed. Some had the guts to go back to the game after a while and revised their reviews after seeing what the game was in fact after the tutorial. Damn shame, as Obsidian had a few story DLC's prepared for the game Still hope that Sega will give Obisidian the IP to make a sequel and wrap up a few unfinished businesses It's available from the Sega shop too, DRM-free; one more reason to see it here.

Almost every main char can die and even the smalest decisions can influence Dialogs. The graphics were terrible for its generation of games, but the depth of gameplay more than made up for it.

Definitely a game worth having. I'd definitely re-buy from GOG. Sega has a patch to remove the DRM, though it's pretty hard to find and kind of hard to implement. Other commentators have said you can find it DRM free on other distributors. Well worth the money. GOG seems like a perfect fit for an under appreciated game like Alpha Protocol.

The sneaking animation is hilarious - part of the game's charm I'd say. I love being a prick who everyone hates! Stop dragging your feet GOG and take my money! Those wishes are duplicates of this one: Add another. Send report.
